Answers from Micah Mann

1.   Who are your three favorite characters from The Muppet Show, Muppets Tonight, The Jim Henson Hour, the Muppet movies, etc. and why?
Kermit because he's the guy everyone loved on their childhoods. Next Fozzie, because I like his jokes more than any other Muppet. Last Walter because we both are BIG Muppet fans.

2.   Who are your three favorite characters from Sesame Street and why?
First Kermit because I grew up with him for years. Next Elmo because he's cute. Last Telly because purple was my high school color.

3.   Who are your three favorite characters from Fraggle Rock and why?
First Cantus, because Jim Henson played him. Second, Traveling Matt because he hangs out with us silly creatures. Last Red because she loves to have fun.

4.   What is your favorite television program starring any of Jim Henson's creations (e.g. The Muppet Show, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, Dinosaurs, etc.) and why?
I'll go with Sesame Street because the characters are cool, and it made me feel good about myself.

5.   What is your favorite Muppet movie and why?
My three favorite Muppet films, in no real order, are The Great Muppet Caper because of the bike scene, The Muppet Christmas Carol because it stays true to the book, and The Muppet Movie because it's classic.

6.   What is your favorite Muppet/Sesame/Fraggle song and why?
My favorite Muppet song is "Cabin Fever" from Muppet Treasure Island because it's fun to dance to.

7.   If you could have dinner with any living Muppet performer who would you choose and why?
I'd hang out with Steve Whitmire because when you hear him as Kermit, you feel like there's something special in the room.

8.   If you could tell Jim Henson one thing, what would it be?
Thanks for everything, Jim. And please bring back Sam & Friends as soon as possible.

9.   If the President called you and asked to discuss Muppet projects, what would you tell him was the "Greatest Muppet Moment of All Time"?
The wedding scene from The Muppets Take Manhattan because ALL the Muppets are there.

10.   What's the name of that song?
It better not be Me Party.

11.   If a judge ruled that Grover had to be your personal assistant for a month, what jobs would you have him do?
Grover would be great as a Disney animator.

12.   In your opinion, what is the worst Muppet production ever made?
I don't believe in WORST Muppet productions. But the most OVERRATED Muppet project would be The Muppets starring Jason Segel. If I went into detail on why, this would be a LONG answer.

13.   Who is one celebrity you would love to see cameo in the next Muppet movie?
I know it won't happen, but I want to see American Idol finalist & Dove Award winner Colton Dixon in a new Muppet movie. He's pretty good, you should listen to him.

14.   If you could take a picture with any Muppet, who would you choose and how would you pose?
I'd take a picture with Lips, and we would do a trumpet battle.

15.   What is your favorite piece of Muppet merchandise that you own? (Feel free to include a picture!)
I have a Walter plush toy that I got at a Disney Store while on vacation.

The Muppets Character Encyclopedia
by Craig Shemin
Available now in bookstores and online

Ryan Dosier - This past Friday Disney and DK Publishing released a must-have new book, The Muppets Character Encyclopedia. The book is written by our friend Craig Shemin who is more capable than most people at writing a Muppets Character Encyclopedia, and he does not disappoint. Contained in the Encyclopedia are over 150 different Muppet characters, all profiled in (sometimes brief) detail with at least one page of text and photos. The amount of fun content and gorgeous photos collected here is incredible.

The most impressive aspect of the 200 page book is just how deep Craig Shemin dug to include characters in the book. No, it's not nearly as all-encompassing as Muppet Wiki, but it also doesn't try (or need) to be. We get entries for The Flying Zucchini Brothers (who are given names like Marco, Giuseppi, and Heathcliff), Fazoobs, Quongo, Rufus the dog, Clodhoppers, and Mama Fiama. The amount of obscurity gathered here is completely insane and I absolutely adore it. Almost every time I turned the page I said, "What?! They included THAT character?! How?!" It's incredible.

The other incredible thing this book contains is a massive, dense collection of high-resolution, beautiful photos. Who among us knew that there were high-resolution, poser puppet photos of Mr. Poodlepants or Mildred Huxtetter or a cacophony of various Whatnots? For characters without high-res, posed photos, screenshots are used. The Koozebanians, Jowls and the Muppets Tonight Band, Jacques Roach, and many others are pulled right from shots from various productions. The dedication and commitment to making this book look good practically oozes from the pages.

Really, there is only one issue I have with the book--and it's an issue I've had with most of Disney's output these days--and it's the fact that there is not a single mention of a Muppet performer to be found. No, I didn't expect every page to say "performed by" on it, and I fully understand that Disney wants these characters to seem real, but would it have been so hard to include an acknowledgements section? All that would've had to be done is a classy "Thanks to Jim, Frank, Jerry, Richard, Dave, Steve, Bill, David, Matt, Peter, Kevin, Louise, Brian, and all the others who've given us a hand over the years." It's really, really not cool with me that the contributions of these men and women is totally glossed over.

But that is in no way a deal breaker for this book. I can't recommend purchasing The Muppet Character Encyclopedia enough. If you are any level of Muppet fan, this book will be a joy to you. For the obsessed fan there's hilarious entries about Miss Mousey's current career, Nigel's path after Muppets Tonight, and Dr. Strangepork's favorite type of music. For casual fans there's info on characters you've never heard of and fun pages about Gonzo's stunts or Fozzie's jokes. For newbies, there's a ton of gorgeous pictures of these amazing characters, plus the book is a great jumping off point to start your Muppet obsession.

Overall, Craig Shemin and DK Publishing have produced a really, really awesome book about the Muppets. It is beautiful, funny, and completely brilliant. Don't miss out on this one!

Weekly Muppet Wednesdays: Sprocket

SPROCKET

Performed by...
Steve Whitmire (head, voice)
Karen Prell (tail, right hand)

First appearance...
Fraggle Rock Episode 101: "Beginnings" (1983)

Most recent appearance...
Muppet Treasure Island (1996)

Best known role...
Big Hairy Monster who guards the hole to outer space; Doc's pet and best friend; "Zombie Attack" High Score holder

WHO IS SPROCKET?
Sprocket is a dog who, in all productions of Fraggle Rock, is the pet and best friend of the "Doc" character. Although Sprocket is a Muppet, to everyone he meets, he is seen as a regular dog. Sprocket is able to do humanlike things that most dogs can’t, such as understand whatever language "Doc" is speaking. He is also a wiz at impressions and is known for his impersonation of Ned Shimmelfinny, during which he growls, chokes himself, then faints.

Though he is his master and spends most of his time with him, Doc is not Sprocket’s only friend. Over time, Sprocket formed friendships with the Fraggles living inside the workshop wall. Although at first he is threatened by them, he soon learns to love the little furry creatures. Sprocket's first friendly encounter with a Fraggle came about when Gobo saved him from being stuck in the Fraggle hole. After this encounter, Sprocket no longer seeing the Fraggles as a threat, but still does his best to alert his master of their presence.

Sprocket has successfully entered Fraggle Rock twice, once when Doc pulls up the floorboards and Sprocket decides to dig into the caves to look for Gobo. While there he meets all of the main species: Fraggles, Doozers, Gorgs, and even Marjory the Trash Heap (who can speak fluent dog). Sprocket returns to Fraggle Rock in a later episode simply by digging into a mound of snow while walking with Doc. This time he, Gobo, and Wrench Doozer all go exploring together.

In 1987, Sprocket accompanied Doc to Grizzly Farms in A Muppet Family Christmas to spend a nice quiet Christmas in the country. After the Muppets arrive, Doc is asks Sprocket if the weird creatures are anything like the Fraggles, to which Sprocket replies with a "kind of" hand gesture. He has a spotlight moment when Rowlf the Dog arrives and the two have a conversation by barking (it helps to know a second language). Later, The Swedish Chef tries to cook Sprocket, thinking he's the Christmas turkey. At the very end, Sprocket is seen washing dishes with some fellow named Jim Henson, who suggests Sprocket dry.

Sprocket has made many other, non-descript appearances without Doc by his side. In The Jim Henson Hour we learn Sprocket is a member of the OMD, The Organization of Muppet Dogs. And in the Dog City special, Sprocket gets thrown out of a bar. He also appeared with Traveling Matt at The Muppets: A Celebration of 30 Years to represent Fraggle Rock. Sprocket also appeared in The Muppets at Walt Disney World, The Muppet Christmas Carol, and Muppet Treasure Island as a background Muppet.

WHY DOES FRAGGLE ROCK NEED SPROCKET?
Because every man needs a best friend, and every Fraggle as well. Sprocket was the connecting tissue between the world of Fraggle Rock and the world of “Outer Space.” Without Sprocket, the Fraggles never would have been discovered by Doc, and vice versa. Sprocket is important because he is an example of a magnificently performed pantomime character who is both comical and realistic at once. Sprocket is a crucial part of Fraggle Rock, and it's very hard to imagine the show without him.

The Muppets Bad Valentine's Cards

Ryan Dosier -  A few weeks ago over on our Tumblr blog, I decided to play into a fun little trend going around the internet: Bad Valentine's Cards. The cards are very simple: bad puns, solid pink background, all Comic Sans font, and poorly Photoshopped images. Obviously, I saw the potential for applying these to the Muppets, and I went a little crazy (which you'll see below). So we're proud to present the perfect cards for the Muppet fans in your life this Valentine's Day!
The first round of cards was so successful, I immediately got to work on Round 2. These are more directed to hardcore Muppet fans... but they're still a lot of fun. Enjoy!

Muppet Retro Reviews: The Muppets' Valentine Show

$

Michael Wermuth - The Muppets’ Valentine Show is the first of two pilots for The Muppet Show. Guest starring Mia Farrow, this special features such all-time favorite characters as George the Janitor, Mildred, and Brewster, not to mention that one Muppet frog guy.

The setting for this special is a home of some sort, and the main character is Wally, a hipster Muppet who types the action on his typewriter. Ironically, Wally is the only main character in this special to have never had another significant or even minor role after this. He is a cool character who probably could have been worked into future productions (surely The Muppet Show could have used a writer character…).

Of course, most of the supporting cast would also fade into obscurity later: Aside from the aforementioned George and Mildred Huxtetter, who would be phased out after the first season, as well as Brewster, who would be reworked into a Guru character who would appear only a few other times, this special features Droop, Rufus (previously seen in The Land of Tinkerdee and Hey Cinderella!), and the debut of Crazy Harry, who in this special was called Crazy Donald. Kermit the Frog appears as a supporting character, and headlines two of the specials three segments (more on those later).

There’s a lot of craziness going on in this special. There’s frogs in the piano, Droop laments that they once had a crumpet who died (but it actually didn’t), Crazy Donald does his trademark of blowing things up whenever people say expressions for explosions. This special doesn’t really involve the Muppets putting on a show, but there are three segments that take place outside of the home: There’s "Froggy Went a Courtin’," in which Kermit and a Big Mouse fight for the affections of Miss Mousey, "Real Live Girl," a dance number with Mia Farrow and Thog, and Kermit’s first news report on the planet Koozebane. As well as the numbers "Love is a Simple Thing" and the finale "I’ve Got Love,: these segments are the highlights of the special.

The only low point in this special is a rendition of "Those Endearing Young Charms," sung by Mia to Rufus after deciding she wants him as her dog. It’s a slow number, not too interesting. I don’t blame Nickelodeon for editing it from its broadcasts of the special. But that number doesn’t spoil all the greatness of this special. There’s no real plot, aside from maybe the Muppets trying to get George to appreciate love. The ending credit sequence is also great, with the Muppets in line to say goodnight to Mia Farrow and get a kiss, and there’s even unexpected cameos from a few familiar Muppets who otherwise aren’t in the special. All in all, The Muppets’ Valentine Show is a great special, and it’s interesting that this was the only non-Christmas holiday special the Muppets have done.

JANUARY 16, 2014

Miss Piggy and the Muppets will be offering up their talents to home-shopping channel QVC next month in connection with both Muppets Most Wanted and "Miss Piggy's Haute Tote," a tote bag designed by the divine swine herself. Miss Piggy will be on QVC's Red Carpet Style event on February 28 at 9:00pm to exclusively debut her tote bag. But that's not all, because on March 16th, the Muppets (it's unclear which ones) will appear on QVC throughout the day to promote the movie, sell stuff, and probably wreak havoc. For more information, including a chance to enter to win a trip to the Muppets Most Wanted World Premiere, visit the QVC website.

Speaking of our favorite porcine princess, Miss Piggy received some major news this week with the reveal of her brand new wedding dress, which will be featured in Muppets Most Wanted. The dress was designed by beloved designer Vivienne Westwood. The dress is made entirely from recycled water bottles. You can learn more about the dress details and read a brief interview with Piggy and Westwood on Harper's Bazaar. Check out the dress below, and join us in speculating who Piggy will walk down the aisle with in Muppets Most Wanted.
Our friends at Sesame Street won the internet this week with the release of a new cell phone game: Flappy Bert. The game is based off of Flappy Bird, an addicting and challenging game released last week that was subsequently taken down by the developer. This led to a slew of rip-off games, but many people have agreed that Flappy Bert is the best of the lot. Plus, the game features the voice of Frank Oz, which is crazy in itself. You can play the game here: http://www.sesamestreet.org/cms-static/flappy_bert/

The Jim Henson Company has a new animated kid's show, Doozers, all about the little green working creatures from Fraggle Rock. Doozers will arrive with a 52-episode debut on Hulu starting April 25th. Jim Henson Company CEO Lisa Henson said, "Our pod squad is right at home with Hulu Kids, because Hulu is a company of builders and innovators like the Doozers, and because kids can learn from and spend time with these characters on-demand like never before." For more information on the new series, check out The Hollywood Reporter's report.

A whole bunch of exciting merchandise for Muppets Most Wanted is arriving in the coming months. Our friends at Muppet Stuff (who just started an awesome new website) shared a number of the new things coming up, including a talking Kermit plush, Kermit shoes (see right), OPI nail polish, and more. Not mentioned in the post are Muppet puppets coming to Toys R Us and FAO Shwartz, plush at Walgreens, and a number of other awesome things. Hope you've been saving your money, Muppet fans!

The Muppets are appearing in a new promotion for Subway restaurants coinciding with Muppets Most Wanted. Check out their new commercial, featuring Kermit, Miss Piggy, The Swedish Chef, and Subway's Jared below!

Earlier this week, a new Valentine's Day-themed spot for Muppets Most Wanted debuted online. The spot features lots of Tina Fey's Nadya character expressing her undying love for Kermit. I laughed. Multiple times. Watch it below.

Yet another promo for the movie debuted last night during the Winter Olympics and appeared online immediately afterwards. The Twitter review aspect of the commercials have reached their peak with this one. Watch below...

We close this week on a very sad note. John Henson, son of Jim and Jane Henson and performer of Sweetums from the late 80s to the early 2000s, passed away Friday night at age 48. The Jim Henson Company confirmed John's passing on Saturday and we join the rest of the Muppet community in sending our thoughts to his family and friends. John was a wonderful talent, a partner of The Jim Henson Company, and is remembered as a kind, generous, and thoughtful person. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world, John. You will be missed.

Remembering John Henson

Over the weekend, we learned of the shocking, tragic news that John Paul Henson, the son of Jim and Jane Henson, had passed away late on February 14th. As the Muppet community learned of the news, an outpouring of love and support remembering the great man was shown online. Powerful, beautiful tributes to John were released by The Jim Henson Company, The Jim Henson Legacy, and many more.

Below is a lovely, touching, in-depth tribute to John from The Jim Henson Company, originally posted on their Facebook page yesterday.

John Henson (March 25, 1965 – February 14, 2014)

John Henson was born in Greenwich Connecticut to his parents, Jim and Jane Henson. At seven years old, he and his family moved to Bedford NY, where they lived through John’s childhood years.

At sixteen, John, with his friend, John Kahn, bought an old school house in Saugerties, New York. Kahn then trained Henson in the arts of home building, furniture design, and sculpture. These disciplines would become John Henson’s life work.

Throughout his adult life, John worked with his family’s business, The Jim Henson Company, as an accomplished puppeteer. He performed the character Sweetums from 1992 until 2003, and worked as a full-body performer inside of creatures such as the Coca Cola polar bear, among others. After Jim Henson’s death in 1990, John became a shareholder and active board member in the company, and stayed involved in The Jim Henson Company until his death.

His main life passion always returned him to his projects in Saugerties, New York. He became a master in three-dimensional spatial design. His many homes and buildings in Saugerties reflect his unique design aesthetic and his extraordinary attention to detail. Each of his buildings is an art project, an immersive experience balancing function with artistic expression. His exterior, and fine interior work, utilizing a wide range of materials; from wood, to metal, to stone, created rooms of exquisite embracing craftsmanship. At the time of his death, John Henson had owned and extensively developed many properties in Saugerties, New York.

In 1996, John met the love of his life, Gyongyi Katona, and in 1999 they gave birth to their first daughter, Katrina. Their second daughter, Sydney, was born in 2003. John was a loving, playful, and dedicated father, and was very involved in all aspects of his girls’ lives.

John’s family commented, “John had the deepest soul of any man alive; sensitive, artistic, and extremely compassionate, there was no limit to his love.”

A close friend of the family, Arthur Novell described John as, “a most remarkably kind and generous man who gave so much and asked for so little. He infused us with the light of his inquisitive mind, the spirit of his keen intellect and the genius of his talent to create. John will forever be remembered and cherished and talked about and somewhere in the Universe he will be rejoiced.”

John Henson is survived by his wife Gyongyi Henson, and his two daughters, Katrina (15 years) and Sydney (10 years), as well as his siblings, Lisa, Cheryl, Brian, and Heather.
Other tributes to this great, singular soul that was John Henson, included these lovely words from Muppet director Kirk Thatcher, who wrote..

"[John] had a huge heart, an easy laugh, a lopsided grin, twinkly impish eyes and a wild, creative streak that burned with a quiet intensity that shone through his life and art. He was a merry madman who played Sweetums in almost all of the Muppet projects I directed and he did it with the enthusiasm and silliness worthy of the big, sweet Ogre. I will miss him tremendously, but know that he's with his parents, Jim and Jane, heading off to make some crazy stuff with them in that infinite space that exists just beyond our physical senses, but we feel in our hearts."

On Twitter, Muppet performers Tyler Bunch and Stephanie D'Abruzzo as well as songwriter Paul Williams shared their support via Twitter, which you can see below.

Some truly gorgeous, touching fan art tributes to John were drawn by some talented artists as well.
"R.I.P. John Henson" by JohnnyBCartoonMan

John Henson was a truly talented, beautiful, soulful man. As seen in the tributes and photos, he brought happiness and smiles and joy to those who knew him. As Sweetums, John gave incredible life one of the Muppets' most real characters. John not only embodied Sweetums in a puppet, but in life as well. Sweetums has a heart as big as he is, and John was the same way. I think I like Kirk Thatcher's description of John best... a Merry Madman.

We miss you greatly John. Thank you for sharing your magic with the world.

Our thoughts and love are with the friends, family, and loved ones of John during this tragic time.

Weekly Muppet Wednesdays: Architect Doozer

ARCHITECT DOOZER

Performed by...
Jerry Nelson

First appearance...
Fraggle Rock Episode 208: "All Work and All Play" (1984)

Most recent appearance...
Fraggle Rock Episode 513: "Change of Address" (1987)

Best known role...
Leader of the Doozer community

Memorable quote...
"Oh it is imperative that you pay very close attention during briefings, especially this one!"

WHO IS ARCHITECT DOOZER?
The Architect Doozer, known by no other name, acts as the de facto leader of the entire Doozer community in Fraggle Rock. The Architect supervises over the designing and building of all Doozer constructions and also acts as mentor to Doozer younglings, granting them their helmets in a "graduation" ceremony. Architect Doozer first appeared in the season two episode "All Work and All Play," where he informed Cotterpin Doozer that it was time for her to study and become an actual Doozer. After much frustration and a lesson about being different, the Architect takes Cotterpin on as his apprentice.

More often than not, Architect gets frustrated by Cotterpin's youthful imagination and eagerness to revolutionize Doozer building methods and customs. Despite this, the Architect always has a genuine respect and affection for young Cotterpin. Much like Cotterpin, the Architect refused to take the helmet like other Doozers, having no interest in building, as mentioned in the episode "All Work and All Play." All Architect really wanted to do was draw, so he chose to take the drawing board instead. Originally Doozers favored circles, and it took Architect years to get some nice squares back into Doozer constructions.

In the episode "The Doozer Contest," Architect hosted a competition between Flange and Modem Doozer to see which Doozer stick tastes the best. In "Doozer Is As Doozer Does," Architect and Cotterpin save Wrench Doozer after a wicked "flooping" accident. In "Gunge the Great and Glorious," while surveying the Doozer Dome, Architect found Gunge's wild Doozer party and put a stop to it.

WHY DOES FRAGGLE ROCK NEED THE ARCHITECT DOOZER?
It's obvious that the Architect is the most important and influential of the Doozer community. It's likely that Architect builds the best building, has the best ideas, and works the hardest. He also shows that being unique in a community of individuals doing nothing but the same is sometimes more valuable than following the rules.

Ten Favorite Episodes of The Muppet Show

$
0
0
Michael Wermuth - The Muppet Show has so many great episodes, and so many great songs and sketches from various episodes. But what are the best ones, exactly? This is a question that’s been on my mind for over a year. Many of the best episodes have some segments that aren’t that good, and many episodes that aren’t that good have at least a few really great sketches. With that in mind, it can be a challenge to determine which ones are truly the best.

But after thinking and thinking, I have determined my Top Ten Favorite Episodes, from start to finish. With these episodes, there’s barely a dull moment. They have great backstage plots, funny sketches, memorable songs, and more. No, I am not including episodes just because they include a certain character or recurring sketch that I like. No, I am not including certain episodes just because they have a few sketches that I really like. And no, I’m not including episodes just because I’m a huge fan of the guest star.

1.   Episode 123: Kaye Ballard
One of the strongest episodes from the first season (and the only one from Season 1 on this list), this is one of the few episodes where the Electric Mayhem is involved with the plot. It also features rare speaking appearances (at least by Muppet Show standards) for Nigel, Thog, and Trumpet Girl. Plus such great performances as "You Don’t Want My Love" with the Country Trio, "Life Gets Tedious" with Pa from The Gogolala Jubilee Jugband, and "Oh Babe, What Would You Say?" with Kaye Ballard and Thog. And Rowlf’s solo performance of the closing theme is great as well.

2.   Episode 209: Madeline Kahn
If there’s a Muppet retrospective, it’s always a safe bet that a clip from this episode will be included. And it’s such a great one, with highlights ranging from Kermit’s “Happy Feet,” Madeline Kahn’s encounter with Doglion in the park, Miss Piggy’s refusal to believe that Link Hogthrob used a control that he said he did, Floyd’s rendition of “New York State of Mind” (which also gets repeated in another episode... and that episode is on this list as well!), and of course a backstage plot where Gonzo falls in love with Madeline, leading to him singing “The Wishing Song.”

3.   Episode 212: Bernadette Peters
Another of the show's greatest episodes, this one involves Robin wanting to run away from home after not being noticed by the others. Additionally, there’s the running gag of Miss Piggy being jealous of Miss Mousey. Sketch highlights include Bernadette Peters singing “Take a Little One Step,” “Apple Jack,” and of course the classic “Just One Person." Plus, Sam the Eagle recites “The Ant and the Grasshopper,” a shoe is the patient in Vet's Hospital, and Beaker tries Bunsonium in Muppet Labs.

4.   Episode 223: John Cleese
One of the shows funniest episodes by far, this one involves Gonzo getting a long arm after catching a cannonball with his bare hand, getting teased by Fozzie and Floyd, and finally getting help from John Cleese (who only succeeds in being weirder than Gonzo). Cleese himself spends the episode not wanting to be on the show, complaining about having to work with pigs and monsters, and refusing to do the closing number. Plus Lubbock Lou and His Jughuggers sing “Somebody Stole My Gal,” Kermit and Piggy sing “Waiting at the Church,” Robin and Sweetums sing “Two Lost Souls,” Kermit interviews the Koozebanian Spooble, “At the Dance” couples tell “fly in my soup” jokes… Well, a list of what I don’t like about this episode would be shorter.

5.   Episode 301: Kris Kristofferson & Rita Coolidge
This was the first episode with two guest stars, and as the first episode of the third season, it’s a strong season premiere. The guest star numbers are great, but there’s also elevator shoes in Muppet Labs, Gonzo balancing a piano, a repeat of “New York State of Mind” (but in this episode it’s not the UK Spot), and we get the introduction of Gladys the cafeteria lady and the Canteen setting.

6.   Episode 318: Leslie Uggams
Sesame Street’s Big Bird joins Leslie Uggams in this show (sort of a second guest star) for the closing number, “Love Will Keep Us Together,” and also gets to meet Miss Piggy and Gonzo. Uggams herself sings with the big monsters for a rendition of “Hey There Good Times,” we get the first Bear on Patrol sketch, Vendawish makes a short Muppet taller, and Gonzo courts Camilla.

7.   Episode 424: Diana Ross
In this episode, Statler and Waldorf keep track of the show's acts like Olympic judges, based on what the audience likes. And for some reason in this episode the audience only likes the guest star, Diana Ross, who does such show-stopping numbers as “Last Time I Saw Him” and “Reach Out and Touch.” Her numbers are great, but the Muppet-only bits are also great, including the opening number “I Go to Rio” and Beaker’s rendition of “Feelings.”

8.   Episode 502: Loretta Swit
In this episode, Kermit actually fires Miss Piggy for planting items about them in the gossip papers, with guest star Loretta Switt replacing Piggy in Veterinarian’s Hospital and Pigs in Space. This episode has more focus on the plot than sketches, but there are some great sketches, such as Loretta’s performance of “I Feel the Earth Move.” Other great moments include Miss Piggy’s rendition of “One of These Days” and the rousing closing number “Side by Side by Side.”

9.   Episode 506: Brooke Shields
In this episode, the Muppets put on a production of Alice in Wonderland, with Brooke Shields as Alice. Things don’t exactly go as planned when Brooke shrinks and can’t get back to her normal height. Some of the highlights include the opening number “I’m Falling,” Scooter acting out the Jabborwocky poem, a courtroom scene with Marvin Suggs as the judge, and a mad tea party with a song from a famous movie based on a different fairy tale.

10.   Episode 523: Linda Ronstadt
In this episode, Miss Piggy locks Kermit in a trunk after realizing he has a crush on the guest star, Linda Ronstadt. Three of Linda’s four numbers have been on other lists I’ve made on The Muppet Mindset, so it goes without saying that they are great numbers, and she’s such a great guest in her scenes. Additional highlights include a gloomy rendition of “I’m So Happy,” a rare full-body appearance of The Swedish Chef, and Rowlf’s performance of “The Cat Came Back.”
Well, those are my top ten, but I know there’s a lot of great episodes I didn’t include on this list. What are some of yours?

Muppets Most Wanted TV Spots Breakdown, Part 1

Ryan Dosier over the past week (and some of last week), Disney has released a slew of new TV spots for Muppets Most Wanted. These new spots are so jam-packed with new scenes from the movie that we decided they deserved one of our famous Muppet Mindset shot-by-shot Breakdowns! That was until we found a total of 50 never-before-seen shots in these spots... so the spots deserve two breakdowns! Let's get started with the first, shall we?

Shots from "America's Favorite Frog" TV Spot
Constantine mugging the camera (I assume) during the song "I'll Get You What You Want (Cockatoo in Malibu)." I love his outfit here and the set is fantastic.
Looks like Constantine is finding out that being Kermit isn't as easy as he thought.
This is either the funniest or the most dramatic picture I've ever seen. Either way, amazing.
Constantine has eyelids!! Also an extremely fantastic shot.
This is Sam's traditional response to a rubber chicken.
Now there's the Kermit we know and love!
I really, really love that Fozzie and Walter are (seemingly) paired up so much in this. What a great team.
I know we've seen this scene in a trailer before, but I paused the video here and it was too perfect not to grab it while I could.

Shots from "More Muppets" TV Spot
Oh my gosh this is amazing.
So. Much. Awesome. Scooter's prominent role in this movie is insane.
The guards won't let Sam in. Poor Sam.
Piggy's hair and necklace are so unique. Also... Floyd is near to Foo-Foo so now I'm holding my breath that they have some sort of interaction.
I love this shot so much. Look how wide Gonzo's mouth is!!
Perfect facial expression.
Okay. This shot. This was so insane and unreal that I had to learn how to make animated GIFs just so I could have a GIF of this. This movie is elevating puppetry to massive heights.
Whatcha doin', Sammy?
Again, we've seen this shot before, but I accidentally paused on this and it was too perfect not to grab. Welcome to my nightmares!
Shot of Piggy in her wedding dress in the movie!! Look at that church! AHHHH!!!
Kermit or Constantine? The eternal question.

Shots from "Confusing Plot" TV Spot
Kermit is a little disturbed by the Gulag food. Don't let Lew Zealand see this...
This is definitely Constantine. Right?
First of all: BEAUREGARD. Second of all, aww, he's having such a great--
--WHOA! PIGEON. I laughed so hard at this. I'm still laughing at this. Poor Bo.
Amazing shot. You really can't beat these group shots of these gorgeous characters.
Imagine waking up to THIS in the morning!
Look at all those wonderful mariachi outfits! Arriba!
The cinematic nature of this movie is seriously unreal. Without a doubt the most action-packed Muppet movie ever.
Is that the--Yup. It's the weird little monster who sings "You Are My Sunshine" during "Hugga Wugga" on The Muppet Show. Unbelievable.
Christoph Waltzes while Crazy Harry bombs. Also, Janice is playing clarinet, Floyd is playing some sort of tuba, and Rowlf is playing accordion? Awesome.

That's it for today! Check back tomorrow for shots from the "Two Women" and "Right Now" TV spots!

Muppets Most Wanted TV Spots Breakdown, Part 2

Ryan Dosier - We're back with coverage of the two remaining Muppets Most Wanted TV Spots that our breakdown yesterday didn't get to. Here we go!

Shots from "Two Women" TV Spot
Poor Kermit has rarely looked this sad. I would be too if I was getting arrested again!
And Tina Fey has never looked so crazy.
If you look closely, you can see Annie Sue again in the back by Scooter and Sweetums.
You can almost hear Constantine saying, "What is up girl? You are the only one for mean."
This is amazing and so funny. I love, love that Nadya is in love with and obsessed with Kermit. Makes me very happy.
Hey! How did Nadya get into my room?!

Shots from "Right Now" TV Spot
Can I just acknowledge how insane this movie is going to be? It's so beautifully weird.
Honestly if you told me this shot was from 1979, I wouldn't bat an eyelash.
Turns out Dominic is an accomplished ice skater!
Gratuitous Muppet Show arches shot. Hi, Wanda!
Again... how is this not just a deleted scene from The Muppet Show?
When I saw this I literally yelped.
Oh, look, Beaker learned to translate his thoughts to subtitles!
My thoughts exactly, seemingly random Twitter user.
I like to pretend that the words from the Twitter people at the bottom are what Ty Burrell is saying.
I'm wondering if this is real too, Twitter friend. In this shot alone we see Link Hogthrob, Wanda, and Beauregard. In 2014. How can it be real?!
Yes, Fozzie, you'll always be real to me.

Shots from "Winter Games" TV Spot
This is crazy. This is the amount of extras and production value the culled together for the Tower of London scenes. Incredible!!
"Thanks for not shooting me!"
"No problem, Keer-mit!" Oh my gosh, I love Stanley Tucci.

And there ya go! Hope this tides you over until the next time we have six new TV spots...

The Great Muppet Survey - Casey Daron

Answers from Casey Daron

1.   Who are your three favorite characters from The Muppet Show, Muppets Tonight, The Jim Henson Hour, the Muppet movies, etc. and why?
Kermit, because he’s the glue that holds all the Muppets together, and just plain awesome! Gonzo, because his craziness relates to me. He is always doing something outside of the norm, and I feel like I do the same. Lastly, Sweetums, because he is this big ferocious looking monster, but on the inside he is just a big loveable lump of fur. And not to mention all of his great moments with Robin. (We need more of those, Disney!)

2.   Who are your three favorite characters from Sesame Street and why?
Ernie, because he is a load of fun, always trying to get Bert to have fun. "Rubber Duckie" is one of my favorite Sesame Street songs, and it shows how Jim had a great singing voice. Grover, because he seems like he would be fun to spend an afternoon with. He’s always doing something crazy, and he would make any day great! Finally, Big Bird because he is wise beyond his years. I mean, he’s only six, and deals with problems adults struggle with!

3.   Who are your three favorite characters from Fraggle Rock and why?
Wembley, because he is funny and reminds me of myself, always indecisive. Cantus, because I feel he is one of Jim’s better characters. Cantus is almost like the Fraggle form of Jim, always wise and knowing what to do. I also love Boober, a great Dave Goelz character. Boober balanced the happiness levels of the show. He is such a worry-wart, being scared of the silliest things!

4.   What is your favorite television program starring any of Jim Henson's creations (e.g. The Muppet Show, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, Dinosaurs, etc.) and why?
Although I REALLY love The Muppet Show, I’m going to have to go with Dinosaurs on this one. I love how it is a metaphor for the current society and all of their wrong doings. It tackled some pretty edgy subjects for being a family show. And also, who doesn’t love Baby?

5.   What is your favorite Muppet movie and why?
My favorite has to be The Muppet Movie. It’s how the Muppets came to be. I also see it as a time when The Muppets were becoming true superstars, and Jim’s hard work had paid off. It really set the stage for future Muppet productions. The soundtrack is brilliant from start to finish. Some of my favorite Muppet songs are featured in the movie.

6.   What is your favorite Muppet/Sesame/Fraggle song and why?
Like pretty much everyone on here, my favorite is “The Rainbow Connection.” It is a lovely tribute to Jim, and Kermit’s theme song. It is such a great ballad, and can make any glum day bright.

7.   If you could have dinner with any living Muppet performer who would you choose and why?
Hmmm… this is tough. I think I’d have to choose Bill Barretta. I’d really like to talk to him about his work on Dinosaurs. He has some truly memorable characters like Pepe, and took on the role of many of Jim’s characters. I would want to know how it feels to play such great characters, and how it felt to be in Jim’s shoes.

8.   If you could tell Jim Henson one thing, what would it be?
I’d want to let him know how appreciative I am of his work, and how he inspired millions of people worldwide with his work. I’d like to tell him how he inspired me to be a puppeteer, and to strive for your dreams, no matter how crazy they seem.

9.   If the President called you and asked to discuss Muppet projects, what would you tell him was the "Greatest Muppet Moment of All Time"?
Probably when Walter passes out when he meets Kermit for the first time. I think that pretty much sums up how every Muppet fan would be in that circumstance.

10.   What's the name of that song?
Tom Sawyer? The Trooper? Ohh… that song! Yeah, I dunno.

11.   If a judge ruled that Grover had to be your personal assistant for a month, what jobs would you have him do?
I ask him to be in a band with me, see what happens. Hopefully he wouldn’t get into too much trouble… guitars are expensive!

12.   In your opinion, what is the worst Muppet production ever made?
I like all of the Muppet productions. None of them are BAD per say, but the one I watch least is probably The Muppet Christmas Carol. I’m not sure, I just think it has to do with the fact that it doesn’t feature enough Muppets in it. I think J.P. Grosse should have played a good Scrooge. It truly is a beautiful story though.

13.   Who is one celebrity you would love to see cameo in the next Muppet movie?
Probably Jimmy Fallon. I mean, look at him! He’s a HUGE Muppet fan! I’m surprised he hasn’t been in anything yet!

14.   If you could take a picture with any Muppet, who would you choose and how would you pose?
I think I’d like to have my picture taken with Walter. We would both be having fan-attacks and be freaking out.

15.   What is your favorite piece of Muppet merchandise that you own? (Feel free to include a picture!)
I’m going to have to give my THREE favorite Muppet items. One, my Master Replicas Kermit, Two, my Master Replicas Gonzo, and Three, my Of Muppets And Men book. That thing is SUPER rare!

Weekly Muppet Wednesdays: Vicki

Written by Abigail Maughan.

VICKI

Performed by...
Fran Brill

First appearance...
The Jim Henson Hour Episode 101: Outer Space (1989)

Most recent appearance...
The Jim Henson Hour Episode 112: Food (1990)

Best known role...
Stage manager at Muppet Central

WHO IS VICKI?
Vicki is a resourceful young film school student who works as the director’s assistant at Muppet Central on the 1989 TV series The Jim Henson Hour. She gives Kermit the Frog much-needed help in running the show, as well as engaging in a number of backstage shenanigans.

Throughout the course of The Jim Henson Hour, Vicki figured out how to fix the defective Digit, made Kermit feel old, monitored the show’s ratings, sang a few lines of “La Bamba,” got annoyed by Bean Bunny, found the missing Dog City film reel, threw a book at Link Hogthrob, sang and danced with guest star Smokey Robinson, and attempted to do Kermit’s job when he went on vacation, among other things.

Sadly, Vicki disappeared forever after the show and is no longer used in current productions, along with the majority of her Jim Henson Hour costars. However, the puppet for Vicki was recycled in two "Muppet Time" segments in 1994, as a character named Scary Mary.

WHY DO THE MUPPETS NEED VICKI?
It’s always exciting when new female Muppet characters emerge, and Vicki had the potential to really shine, had the show been more successful. She fills an important Scooter-esque role without being a female carbon copy of Scooter. The two would actually make a very efficient team. Vicki is reliable, intelligent, pleasant, and most importantly, funny. Given all those factors, Vicki could very well fit in with the Muppets today.

FEBRUARY 27, 2014

The Muppets have yet another extraordinary advertising partner in their promotions for Muppets Most Wanted. Lipton Tea has partnered with the Muppets as part of their new "Be More Tea" promotion. A brand new commercial has been released starring Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and an entire metropolitan area full of Animal. Watch the truly incredible new commercial below, and be on the lookout for it to air on Sunday during the Academy Awards on ABC as well.

Plus, you can now watch a behind the scenes video about the making of the commercial! (Thanks ToughPigs!)

Speaking of the Oscars, Statler and Waldorf contributed their typically curmudgeonly reviews for the nominees for Best Picture to PAPERMAG. Read all about their choices, and try not to act surprised when they favor Nebraska, the film about an old man trying to collect a million dollars.

The internet collectively lost their minds this week over the Muppets'Instagram account, which has been active for months now. Everywhere from CNN, to Buzzfeed, to The A.V. Club went crazy for the Muppet selfies present on the account. Check out a few of the selfies below, and follow The Muppets on Instagram for more!
The other day a beautifully random video from Toyota came out of nowhere. The video features Rowlf the Dog and Rizzo the Rat in the Toyota Highlander getting ice cream. The video was directed by Muppet master Kirk Thatcher and was apparently filmed completely in "reality" style, so the human participants had no idea what was coming. Their reactions are WAY too tame. Anyway... watch the awesome, awesome video below.

The Muppets are getting a cover feature in the UK-based Starburst Magazine. The official details on what's inside are: It's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights, it's time to meet the Muppets... in the most sensational, inspirational, celebrational, Muppetational issue of STARBURST yet! That’s right, in honour of the iconic characters’ continued cinematic comeback with this month’s MUPPETS MOST WANTED, we turn the spotlight on Kermit and co. to explore their 40+ year career on screen. We also speak to key talent that contribute to the magic, including director JAMES BOBIN and The Jim Henson Company chairman, BRIAN HENSON. You can order the issue from the Starburst site, and it it is available at some Barnes & Noble stores in the U.S.

Walt Disney Records will be re-releasing The Muppet Movie Original Soundtrack on vinyl record this year for Record Store Day (April 19, 2014). The release features all-new liner notes from legendary songwriter Paul Williams, which is sure to be great. To search for stores in your area participating in Record Store Day, check out their official website.

The Disney Channel staple, The Movie Surfers, visited the set of of Muppets Most Wanted and chatted with Walter, wrangled some penguins, and unleashed Animal. The video is actually pretty entertaining. Watch it below...

Big Tour - Movie Surfers - Muppets Most Wanted BTS on Disney Video

Finally, in "Set your DVR" news, Gonzo will be appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC on Monday, March 3rd at 11:35pm ET. This is sure to be a crazy experience (based only on the fact that Gonzo is there), and you can't deny it's really really cool that Gonzo is getting to appear solo on a late night show.

WATCH: "We're Doing a Sequel" Song Preview from Muppets Most Wanted

Yesterday Disney released a new Muppets Most Wanted preview video that introduced the world to "We're Doing a Sequel," the film's opening number. Obviously, the clip is packed with spoilers and contains a hefty preview of the song--although it's not the entire song. But if you don't mind being spoiled, the song is absolutely incredible. The fourth wall is completely broken down and it's the most Muppety thing I've seen in forever. Kudos to Bret McKenzie for bringing his A-game yet again.

The Muppets Predict the Oscar Winners - 2014

$

Ryan Dosier - Last year ahead of the Academy Awards, we decided to tap the Muppets for their picks for Best Picture. Well, we've done it again this year. (Unless Disney is asking, in which case this is completely fan-made and please don't sue me.) Check out below for which of the nine films nominated for Best Picture your favorite Muppet thinks will take home the gold tonight!
Sam Eagle chose the Tom Hanks vehicle Captain Phillips. Ever since Muppet Treasure Island he's had a thing about pirates.
Gonzo was all about Gravity, the 3-D space epic from Alfonso Cuaron. Although he couldn't help but wonder how different it would be if it was called Plummeting.
Annie Sue Pig favors American Hustle. Not only does it star The Muppets star Amy Adams, but Annie Sue's hair is right at home.
Beaker, via translation from Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, expressed his love of the brutal 12 Years a Slave. Apparently he sympathizes?
Kermit the Frog really enjoyed Her. He was really taken with the idea of dating an operating system that is physically incapable of karate chopping.
Floyd Pepper, Zoot, and the Electric Mayhem really liked Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club. Mostly because they think the film title would make a good band name, but also because Floyd really admires McConaughey's mustache.
Fozzie Bear greatly enjoyed Nebraska--even though he did spend the whole movie waiting for Bruce Dern to heckle him.
Miss Piggy liked Philomena, even though the film was so drastically changed in editing that it completely removed her role as Judi Dench's attractive lady pig friend.
Finally, Pepe the Prawn adored Martin Scorsese's controversial The Wolf of Wall Street. He liked it for reasons we don't feel comfortable mentioning on a family website.

There you have it! Which Muppet do you agree with, Muppet fans? Be sure to watch the Academy Awards TONIGHT on ABC! Not only is it hosted by friend of the Muppets Ellen DeGenneres, but the Muppets will be featured in a commercial for Lipton Tea during the telecast.

Join us next year when we'll hopefully be pulling for Muppets Most Wanted to take home an Oscar!
