Interview with Songwriter Paul Tracey

Jarrod Fairclough - Hello everyone. Look, I’m back! It’s been a while, hasn’t it? How’s the family I’m very excited, because today I’m bringing you a rarely heard story of a song from The Muppet Show, specifically "The Wishing Song," which Gonzo sings in the Season 2 episode with Madeline Kahn.

Now, without getting into it, this song is very important to me, it helped me through some tough times. Recently I was looking it up on YouTube, and I discovered a comment by a guy who claimed to have written it, so I explored, and sure enough, the guy’s name was Paul Tracey. I looked on his site, and got in contact with him, asking if we could interview him. Well, instead of that idea, we decided that Paul would just share his story outright. So, without any further ado, take it away Paul!

HOW THE WISHING SONG CAME TO THE MUPPET SHOW
By Paul Tracey

It must have been around 1970 when my wife and I were cast as actors in a local New York TV show. It starred Phil Bruns, Sam Waterston and others. We acted out folk stories and every week there was a theme to the show, and all the stories related to that theme.

The producer came to me one day and said, "Paul, you know a lot of folk songs, don't you? This week's theme is wishing. Do you have any folk songs about wishing?"

"Yes, I do," I replied. "Here's one. It's an Irish song called The Shepherd's Lamb."

I began to sing it. It's a very cute song with a great melody and a Gaelic chorus.

I wish I had the shepherd's lamb,
The shepherd's lamb, the shepherd's lamb;
I wish I had the shepherd's lamb,
And Katie coming after.

Iss O gurrim gurrim hoo,
Iss grmachree gon kellig hoo,
Iss O gurrim gurrim hoo,
Sthoo oattha beg dho wauher.

"Yes, yes," the producer interrupted, " I don't like it. Write another one!"

"Write another one?" I questioned. "You don't write folk songs!"

"I know," he said, "write another one."

I was astonished, but we went home that night and decided to try and write a new folk song about wishing. I had only written a couple of songs at that time. Barbara came up with the opening line, 'I wish I had a coat of silk, the color of the sky.' I came up with the next two lines, 'I wish I had a lady, fair as any butterfly. I wish I had a house of stone that looked down on the sea.' And Barbara finished off the verse with the most poignant line, 'But most of all I wish that I was someone else but me.'

I quickly created a melody to the words and put it to a simple guitar accompaniment. The rest of the song pretty much wrote itself. The next day I sang it to the producer and he loved it! We used it in the show and he commissioned me to write others in the series.

Later, in Johannesburg in the recording studios of Gallo Africa, I included the song in my first album called "Something Else." On returning to New York, I gave copies of my album to various friends, and one of them also happened to be a friend of Jim Henson. Jim was riding in his car one day, and our friend gave him the album, saying, "Here, Jim, you might like some of these songs."

And he did!

What an honor it was to have my song on The Muppet Show! Surprisingly I never caught the show when it first ran. Years later I finally saw how Gonzo had sung it so movingly to Madeleine Kahn.

They used four of my songs on The Muppet Show: the Wishing Song of course, the Dog Walk, the Ugly Song and Something's Missing. The unusual thing was that, apart from the wonderful songs that Joe Raposo wrote, the Muppets normally only sang standards; that was one of the reasons, I believe, why they were so funny.

Jim came to my house one morning for breakfast and asked me to write a couple of other songs. I did, but they never got used. But I had the chance to meet this lovely and brilliant man. Wasn't I fortunate!

THE WISHING SONG (as sung by Gonzo on The Muppet Show)
Words and Music by Paul Tracey, Kunjani Music.

I wish I had a coat of silk, the color of the sky.
I wish I had a lady fair, and then a butterfly,
I wish I had a house of stone that looked down on the sea
But most of all I wish that I was someone else but me.

Now I don't have a coat of silk, but I still have the sky
Now I don't have a lady, but there goes a butterfly
Now I don't have a house of stone, but I can see the sea
Now most of all I know that I am happy to be me.
I'm happy to be me.

Note:
When Jim Henson used my song, The Wishing Song, for The Muppet Show, he either misheard the lyric or changed it on purpose, I'm not sure which.

Originally the 2nd line was:
"I wish I had a lady, fair as any butterfly."

So there we have it!  I want to thank Paul for being so great.  He’s been nothing but kind to me over the last week getting this thing together!

I’ll see you next time!  Because somehow I know we’ll meet again.  Not sure quite where, and I don’t know just when.  You’re in my heart, so until then, it’s time for saying goodbye!

The Muppets Go to the Super Bowl!

The folks at USA Todayposted a teaser trailer for a commercial today. Why do we care about such a ridiculous thing, you ask? Because the teaser trailer for the commercial in question stars the Muppets! Yup, the Muppets will star in a Super Bowl commercial for the Toyota Highlander with actor Terry Crews! Watch the teaser below:
Rowlf? Electric Mayhem bus?! Terry Crews?! I'm sold. This looks to be a fantastic commercial with a lot of potential. How awesome is it that Disney is promoting Muppets Most Wanted in such huge venues? First the Golden Globes, now the Super Bowl, the most watched television program of any year. I would bet my hat that an Oscar ad is soon to follow.

As if all that weren't enough, Disney today released an official press release and eight hi-res images from the making-of the commercial. They're awesome and you can see them all right here:

Disney’s Muppets will hit the road with Terry Crews, star of the Golden Globe®-winning FOX series ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine,’ in Toyota’s new commercial for the all-new 2014 Toyota Highlander. The 60-second spot, entitled ‘Joyride,’ will make its broadcast debut during Super Bowl XLVIII on Sunday, February 2.

‘Our game-day spot shows how Toyota Highlander puts the “fun” in function,’ said Jack Hollis, vice president of Toyota Division Marketing at Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. ‘Toyota vehicles are built to last and can even endure the most boisterous Muppets, a former NFL player as well as a center console full of chickens.’

With their over-the-top personalities, the Muppets teach Crews’ character a thing or two about ‘unborifying’ his lifestyle as they ‘borrow’ his sweet ride, the Toyota Highlander. The spot features humorous hijinks, dancing and surprises — and no Muppet caper would be complete without an original song. Viewers will see that with seating for up to eight human passengers or more than a dozen Muppets, the all-new Toyota Highlander has plenty of room for everything–everything except boring.

‘We’re always game for a wild ride,’  said Kermit the Frog, who makes a special appearance in the campaign, ‘as long as Animal’s not driving. He doesn’t quite get the whole concept of brakes.’

In addition to the commercial, the Muppets gang will provide real-time updates as they travel to the big game in their Toyota Highlander on February 2. Fans and customers are invited to chat live with the Muppets on game day by tweeting @Toyota or using #NoRoomForBoring.

Super Bowl XLVIII is on Sunday, February 2nd on FOX

Weekly Muppet Wednesdays: Bug

Written by Michael Wermuth.

BUG

Performed by...
Joey Mazzarino

Most notable appearance...
The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland (1999)

Best known role...
Huxley's right-hand man--err... bug.

WHO IS BUG?
Bug is one of the most prominent characters in The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland. He works (somewhat reluctantly) for the villainous Huxley. Bug is Huxley's most prominent minion in Grouchland. His duties include flying Huxley's helicopter, playing games with Huxley by himself (and Huxley still wins, despite not playing), making Huxley's breakfast, telling Huxley what the newspaper says about him (since Huxley can't read), and assisting with Huxley's musical number (and marveling at his singing voice). Though often mistreated by his boss, Bug often talks in a rather pleasant tone.

At first, Bug has no problem assisting Huxley with stealing items from the residents of Grouchland. But then when Elmo goes in search of his blanket, Bug and the Pesties are sent to pose as construction workers so they can lead Elmo into a different direction. Bug tells Elmo the alternate route, but then after Elmo thanks Bug and gives him a hug, Bug starts to have a change in heart. When Elmo finally arrives at Huxley's castle and Huxley decides to destroy the blanket, it gets sucked into a vacuum and into the hands of Bug, who then decides to give the blanket back to Elmo. Huxley pleads to Bug, promising to give back everything he had stolen, but Bug just remarks "less talking, more giving!", and then Huxley starts berating Bug, telling him that he's fired (not that Bug cares now).

WHY DOES SESAME STREET NEED BUG?

The bad guy always needs a sidekick, especially a comical sidekick. And besides, if it weren't for Bug, Elmo wouldn't have gotten his blanket back (which we haven't seen since the movie). Bug is one of the bright spots and a great character in an otherwise lackluster movie.

Underwhelming International Poster for Muppets Most Wanted

Yesterday UK entertainment site SFX revealed a new poster for Muppets Most Wanted that will be used to promote the film in non-US territories. Yes, it's almost the same poster as the previous UK poster, and not nearly as good looking, but it's new, therefore newsworthy!
But why are Statler and Waldorf there? I haven't seen them at all in the advertising for the movie yet. Fozzie is WAY too small and not at all to scale. The Bunsen and Beaker and Statler and Waldorf poser photos are from long before Disney owned the Muppets. Why not take new pictures of the puppets? It really makes no sense to me. And the plain white background is an odd choice... But hey, it's still better than the US poster.

JANUARY 26, 2014

A lot of this week's News Update will focus on the Muppets' upcoming Super Bowl commercial forToyota. The Muppets are co-starring in the spot with actor Terry Crews. To promote the ad, Access Hollywood visited Terry and the Muppets on their first day of shooting. The video is below, and it features lots of Zoot and Floyd!

Another making-of video was posted on YouTube by Toyota themselves. This one features an extended listen to the brand new song in the commercial, performed by Dr. Teeth, Floyd Pepper, Janice, and Animal. Could this be our first brand new Electric Mayhem song since 1990? The video also stars Terry Crews' pecs, which seemingly have minds of their own.  Animal stars in the Vine video for Toyota, getting excited about the trunk space of the new Toyota Highlander. Miss Piggy, ever the renaissance woman, has now expanded into the world of newspaper contribution. In February's Wall Street Journal Magazine, Miss Piggy has written a short column on love. And she even got her own, beautiful Wall Street Journal illustrated portrait. Read the column here and admire the portrait below!
As we've reported in the past, the Syfy Network is developing a brand new reality competition show themed around Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Contestants in the show will design and create their own incredible creatures to be judged by the all-star panel, which includes Brian Henson. Syfy has released a teaser for the show, which you can watch right here! Jim Henson's Creature Shop Challenge premieres on Syfy on March 25th at 10:00pm/9:00pm central time.
Finally, our friend Tim Shields has alerted us to yet another Disney Store exclusive piece of Muppets Most Wanted merchandise. A brand new, much improved Miss Piggy plush is now available at certain Disney Stores, soon to be available at all Disney Stores. Check out the photo below. Thanks Tim!

Answers from Lucas Ervin

1.   Who are your three favorite characters from The Muppet Show, Muppets Tonight, The Jim Henson Hour, the Muppet movies, etc. and why?
It’s obvious that Kermit is the greatest on The Muppet Show, but I’d have to say Fozzie, Floyd and Rowlf. Fozzie was incredibly sweet, Floyd had a fantastic singing voice and I loved watching Rowlf play the piano... but what all three of them had in common was that they were really good at being incredibly funny without trying too hard.

2.   Who are your three favorite characters from Sesame Street and why?
Ernie, since he’s just so sweet and lovable; Cookie Monster, because he’s hilariously impulsive; and Kermit the Frog, who was the perfect teacher.

3.   Who are your three favorite characters from Fraggle Rock and why?
Wembley, I feel like I’m the most like him... Mokey, because she was bubbly, poetic, motherly, funny and just a tad bit air-headed without seeming unintelligent... Convincing John and Cantus are tied here, because they’re both very unique to the show; I loved how Convincing John was just wild and all over the place, like a combination of a used car salesman and Krusty the Clown. Cantus was fantastic for being quite silly in displaying wisdom.

4.   What is your favorite television program starring any of Jim Henson's creations (e.g. The Muppet Show, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, Dinosaurs, etc.) and why?
While The Muppet Show means the world to me, Fraggle Rock teaches you everything you’ll ever need to be a decent, honest person in life. I think every kid should be made to watch that program at some point.

5.   What is your favorite Muppet movie and why?
The Muppet Movie. The first film encapsulates everything the Muppets stand for.

6.   What is your favorite Muppet/Sesame/Fraggle song and why?
"We’re Not Gonna Stop" from The Muppets at Walt Disney World, "Do The Rubber Duck" by Ernie on Sesame Street, and "The Rock Goes On" from Fraggle Rock.

7.   If you could have dinner with any living Muppet performer who would you choose and why?
Frank Oz. Even if he’s somewhat quiet and distant, I still would be sitting there in awe of everything this guy has accomplished.

8.   If you could tell Jim Henson one thing, what would it be?
Can I give Kermit a hug?

9.   If the President called you and asked to discuss Muppet projects, what would you tell him was the "Greatest Muppet Moment of All Time"?
Seeing all the Muppet characters holding hands as they’re about to go on stage and sing Rainbow Connection with Kermit and Piggy in The Muppets. There is no greater underdog story out there than these wild but loving characters doing their best to put on a show.

10.   What's the name of that song?
Just an Old Fashioned Love Song

11.   If a judge ruled that Grover had to be your personal assistant for a month, what jobs would you have him do?
Grover is just a puppet. Next.

12.   In your opinion, what is the worst Muppet production ever made?
I’d have to say Muppets Tonight… it’s the worst in that it’s the most detrimental of all projects. Here is where we see the decline in central characters and disrespect towards the franchise that Jim worked so hard to build, and because of this loss of focus, the projects that came after were more and more difficult to watch, all the way up until 2009’s Bohemian Rhapsody video.

13.   Who is one celebrity you would love to see cameo in the next Muppet movie?
I’d love to see Steve Carell. He has this amazing discipline about himself when he’s being funny.

14.   If you could take a picture with any Muppet, who would you choose and how would you pose?
With Lew Zealand, and with both of us freeze-framed at throwing boomerang fish.

15.   What is your favorite piece of Muppet merchandise that you own? (Feel free to include a picture!)
I’ve got plenty of neat Muppet stuff but my Palisades collection shelf is still my favorite thing.

Weekly Muppet Wednesdays: The Mutations

Written by Ed Castle.

THE MUTATIONS

Performed by...
Various

First appearance...
The Muppet Show Episode 102: Connie Stevens (1976)

Most recent appearance...
Muppets Most Wanted (2014)

Best known role...
Monsters seen in The Muppet Show opening arches; backup singers for Connie Stevens

WHO ARE THE MUTATIONS?
The Mutations are a trio of purple full-bodied Muppet monsters whose name is a parody of the singing group, The Temptations.  They first appeared on Episode 102 of The Muppet Show as Connie Stevens' back-up singers in "A Teenager in Love." In most of their subsequent appearances, the three would mostly be depicted as dancers rather than singers.  Except for their heights, which vary depending on who is performing them, the Mutations are otherwise indistinguishable from each other.

Although they were introduced as a group, they would also be featured individually in later appearances. Two Mutations, for example, appeared in "The Muppet Show Theme" (alongside Sweetums, Thog, and Timmy Monster) starting in the second season. Other times, only one Mutation would appear in musical numbers, such as in Episode 307 during Alice Cooper's song "School's Out" with other Muppet monsters.

The Mutations have been seen in promotional photos for Muppets Most Wanted during the big wedding scene at the Tower of London.

WHY DO THE MUPPETS NEED THE MUTATIONS?
When filling background roles, Mutations are a good option for the Muppets. If they have a female guest star who needs a dance partner like Madeline Khan in the song "Feet"; full-bodied Muppets are called for for roles in a production number like Tony or Rico in "Copacabana"; or just hanging back to guide guests to their seats as potential ushers at the London wedding, a Mutation's always at hand.

Next Friday, February 7th, The Muppets Character Encyclopedia from DK Publishing will be released in bookstores. The folks at DK have released some really awesome pages from the book spotlighting some incredibly obscure characters. This already seems like a must-buy! Check out the pictures below...

This week saw the passing of a musical legend. Folk singer Pete Seeger died at age 94. A major talent and a major influence in the musical world, Seeger was also a big part of Sesame Street's early success. Seeger was one of the first celebrity guests to appear on the show in 1969. Our friends at ToughPigs.com have a fantastic collection of Seeger's Sesame Street moments and our friends at Sesame Workshop have a lovely write-up about Seeger as well.

Last week we showed off Toyota's Vine video starring Animal. This week, they released another 8-second video starring Rowlf the Dog. It's a perfectly continuously looped video, which is always pretty cool. Watch it below!

Huge news was released last night, as it was announced that The Muppets will be appearing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on February 7th. This is major news because February 7th is Jimmy Fallon's last time hosting Late Night before taking over The Tonight Show. This is sure to be a fun, momentous, and Muppety appearance. No word yet on exactly which Muppets will be appearing... but I'm betting it's gonna be a bunch.

Miss Piggy is appearing in a new commercial for Wonderful Pistachios which has just started airing now all over TV. (I've already seen it three times.) It's funny, cute, and the puppetry is stellar. Watch it below:

Ahead of their big TV debut at the Super Bowl on Sunday, the Muppets released their "No Room For Boring" commercial earlier this week. Well, apparently that wasn't enough--and thank goodness--because Toyota has released another video, featuring an extended rendition of the song. It's essentially a music video for Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, and it's awesome. Watch it now!

For some reason, Toyota has already released three videos that seem to directly tie into the debut of the Muppets'"No Room For Boring" Super Bowl commercial. The Toyota YouTube channel is home to these three absolutely hilarious new videos starring Scooter, Rowlf, Rizzo, Gonzo, Camilla, Swedish Chef, Floyd, Beaker, and Pepe. That grouping alone is enough to get excited about. The Muppets play off of each other extremely well here. Don't miss these!

The Muppets' Super Bowl Round-Up

$

Yesterday, for anyone who may not know because they were under a rock, was Super Bowl Sunday. But based on the number of different and fantastic Muppet things that occurred yesterday, you may as well call it Muppet Bowl Sunday. The Muppets appeared everywhere from the FOX Super Bowl Pre-Game Show, to Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl, to all over Twitter, and beyond. We had a really hard time keeping up with all of it last night, so this morning we've collected everything we could find involving the Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted from yesterday. Please let us know if we missed anything!

During the FOX Super Bowl Pre-Game Show, a roughly 10-15 minute portion of the broadcast was sponsored by Muppets Most Wanted and even billed as The Muppets Most Wanted Super Bowl Pre-Game Show. This entailed nothing but the Muppets Most Wanted logo and some Muppet photos popping up on the front of the FOX sports desk, but it was still really cool to hear. Kudos to Disney for purchasing SO much ad space this year.

But the more exciting thing that happened during this time was a brand new TV spot for Muppets Most Wanted which debuted on FOX during the pre-game. The TV spot is hysterical and shows some great new shots from the film. Watch it below... and then watch it again, we won't blame you.

The Muppets also appeared twice during Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl X, the annual event that pits adorable little pups against each other on the gridiron. The Muppets appeared twice to promote Muppets Most Wanted and pitch their ideas for how to improve the Puppy Bowl. Check out the EXCLUSIVE videos below, filmed by yours truly off the TV.

Disney and the Muppets later posted this great video of The Swedish Chef, Chickens, and Beautiful Day Monster having some football fun on Game Day. Yup. This is a thing.

Before the Super Bowl began, Toyota released another video featuring Rowlf, Scooter, Rizzo, Gonzo, Camilla, The Swedish Chef, Beaker, Floyd, and Pepe in the Toyota Highlander. In this one, they're stuck in traffic. What happens is hysterical and a must-see...

Of course the biggest moment for the Muppets yesterday was when their Toyota Highlander "No Room For Boring" commercial with Terry Crews aired during the second quarter of the Super Bowl. The commercial electrified Twitter when it aired and many are still calling it the best ad of the night. For those who haven't seen it, or for those who just need to see it again, here it is...

Miss Piggy, who was conspicuously not in the Toyota commercial, has finally issued a video response to her slight. It's hilarious, of course. Watch it below...

If you were watching the Super Bowl in a Spanish-speaking country, you probably didn't see the Terry Crews ad. Instead, you might have seen two Spanish commercials featuring the Muppets and the Toyota Highlander. They're really funny and awesome and I really, really hope we see English versions soon.

The Muppets (@TheMuppets) and Miss Piggy (@RealMissPiggy) were also live-tweeting through the entire Super Bowl to hilarious effect. Both accounts were on fire last night, with some really funny, really surprising tweets. Be sure to check out both accounts and scroll through their recent tweets to see great tweets like this...

My favorite part of last night's Super Bowl frenzy was the fact that Toyota USA (@Toyota) handed over the reins of their Twitter account to Pepe the King Prawn, who live-tweeted throughout the entire event. Pepe was spot-on all night long, and I'm 90% sure that our friend Bill Barretta was writing the tweets. However, I'm 100% sure that Bill Barretta was performing Pepe for Toyota's hysterical Vine videos last night, which saw Pepe reacting to the Super Bowl in real-time. They're fantastic. Watch all seven Pepe videos below...

Well there you go! A huge amount of content from yesterday alone. This is absolutely the biggest Muppet news day in a long, long time. Congratulations to the entire Muppet team on this awesome promotion and a truly huge day.

Muppets Most Wanted "Game Day" TV Spot Breakdown

Ryan Dosier - On Super Bowl Sunday, Disney debuted another TV spot for Muppets Most Wanted during the pre-game show, and then released an extended version of the spot online. If you haven't seen it yet, you really should watch it... so here it is!

As you can see, there's a whole lot going on in this spot. So much so, in fact, that we've decided (because Jarrod Fairclough demanded) it deserves one of our handy breakdowns! This time we're only breaking down shots that have not been seen before.

Tina Fey and her Russian police force at the Tower of London?! "Arrest that frog!"?! Is she calling for Kermit or Constantine? Such excitement.
Is Piggy super excited or super scared? Either way, she looks good doing it.
Great to see Bunsen and Beaker get something to do in Muppets Most Wanted after being mostly shafted in The Muppets. Also, 80s Robot is perfect with them. That's brilliant.
I'm willing to bet we won't see this (obviously green-screen) shot of Statler and Waldorf in the film. However, the building behind them is Los Angeles Union Station, which may or may not feature heavily in the opening of the film...
Constantine's Kermit impersonation is getting really good!
Ahh! The classic double pretending to be a mirror gag. This already looks hilarious. I'm all for it.
Is this the first time Janice and Pepe have been in the same shot together? Also, how rare is it that we get to hear Janice speak with a featured line these days? Rully exciting.
Okay, this shot... I literally have no idea what's going on here. Yes, we know Kermit is thrown in the Russian prison, but why are Piggy and Constantine there? And why are they all doing a musical number? And why is there a giant block of ice crammed with Muppets in the way back? I have noidea what's going on here, but I love it.
Look, there's Ray Liotta, Jemaine Clement, Danny Trejo, and our friend Hornswoggle in the front row! I don't recognize any of the guys in back... should I?
Beautiful shot of the European countryside! This shot is just so... cinematic!
Looks like Miss Piggy actually did get to go to France this time! (Or that's just really, really good green screen.)
Aww, Constantine is kinda cute when he's not trying to kill you.
I love Camilla's outfit. And the little rose on Gonzo's lapel. Plus, it's always such a joy to appreciate the fact that Annie Sue is there and her ridiculous Pippa Middleton hat.
I was on set when they filmed this!!! This was probably at about 2am on Hollywood Boulevard. No, that's not green screen, and yes, that's a real tumbleweed.

There you have it! Has your excitement level for the movie peaked yet? Mine's nearing the top...

Weekly Muppet Wednesdays: Foo-Foo

FOO-FOO

Performed by...
Steve Whitmire

First appearance...
The Muppet Show Episode 404: Dyan Cannon

Most recent appearance...
Muppets Most Wanted (2014)

Best known role...
Miss Piggy's precious pet dog

WHO IS FOO-FOO?
Foo-Foo is the precocious, precious puppy belonging to Miss Piggy. Foo-Foo first appeared in the fourth season of The Muppet Show in the episode guest starring Dyan Cannon. The episode is Foo-Foo's signature appearance, as Miss Piggy is getting ready for her big act, she needs someone to watch Foo-Foo. Floyd Pepper of the Electric Mayhem ends up the unfortunate (and unwilling) caretaker for the dog. After getting fed up with spoon-feeding and pampering the pooch, Floyd stuffs Foo-Foo into a drawer. Of course, Miss Piggy explodes with rage when she finds out what happened, but it's hard to feel bad for the feisty Foo-Foo.

In most of Foo-Foo's appearances on The Muppet Show, Foo-Foo was both a puppet and a live dog. The shots that required the dog to perform stunts featured a real dog, while most close up shots were the puppet. This is an example of Jim Henson willingly dispelling some of the Muppets' secrets in The Muppet Show days, with an article (and the picture to the right) about the different ways the dog is portrayed appearing in The Muppet Show Fan Club newsletter in 1979.

Foo-Foo continued to appear (mostly) at Miss Piggy's side after The Muppet Show ended, with appearances in TV specials including The Muppets Go to the Movies, The Muppets: A Celebration of 30 Years, and A Muppet Family Christmas. Foo-Foo's first appearance in a feature film was in the wedding finale of The Muppets Take Manhattan. She disappeared to the background and held a few different names (see: The Jim Henson Hour) for awhile after. It wasn't until The Muppets' Wizard of Oz that Foo-Foo had a featured cameo alongside Miss Piggy as the Wicked Witch of the West.

Aside from a brief appearance in "The Muppets Kitchen with Cat Cora," Foo-Foo disappeared for the remainder of the 2000s. Foo-Foo continued to make illustrated appearances in various books and comics, including a titular role in the 1991 book Foo-Foo, Where Are You? But Foo-Foo is nothing if not tenacious, because she returns this year in Muppets Most Wanted, again at Miss Piggy's side. Foo-Foo is featured a lot in promotional images for the film and seen in quite a number of trailers and TV spots as well.

WHY DO THE MUPPETS NEED FOO-FOO?
Clearly, the Muppets do not need Foo-Foo, since she's always been a hassle. But it's obvious that Miss Piggy adores the yipping little dog quite a lot. It's always fun to see Piggy care for something (that isn't Kermit) and Foo-Foo can simultaneously bring out the best and worst in her. The dog is a great foil for her. But Foo-Foo's real humor comes from her interactions with Kermit and Floyd and the other Muppets who all despise her. For such a cute little thing, Foo-Foo can be quite a pain.

Sesame Street Season 44 Reviews, Part 4

Shane Keating - We’re back with a look at the new Sesame Street Season 44 episodes that have aired over the course of the last month or so! Let’s take a look at what was aired:

EPISODES
“Rosita’s Abuela”, another in the Hispanic-themed episodes this season, was very good. It’s great they’re doing more storylines with Rosita’s Mexican heritage instead of letting that piece of backstory go to waste.

“Baby Bear’s New Sitter” was a repeat storyline from season 39. It’s the only time we’ll see Gabi this seen, and quite possibly the last we’ll see of her on the show, so it has some significance in that respect.

“Grandparent’s Celebration” was entertaining and clearly based on the “Twins Day” episode from season 41. I really liked Baby Bear’s grandfather, constantly confused about modern technology as any senior citizen. And I’ve really started to appreciate the little “Odd Couple” relationship they’ve been giving Alan and Chris, which seems only natural as they’re the most used adult characters currently. The opening song was catchy as well, but I say that about most of the songs these days, which is a good sign.

“The Princess Story” was alright, not spectacular by any means. It’s nice to see Zoe some more, and the whole girl group as a whole. It was your typical “characters make up a story” plot we’ve seen before. I did get a chuckle at the prince declaring himself “overly gallant.”

“Judy and the Beast” wasn’t too great if you ask me, a tad heavy on songs, some better than others (that lobster one is definitely on the bottom) and a storyline they’ve done to death lately. It’s also weird that they had Leslie do the Judy character in the same story as Abby. No other female performers were available that day?

Finally, we have “Baby Bear Hates Wee Tee Ball,” which they’re airing out of order. I thought it was a very nice story and a great message with it. Abby and Cookie’s appearances didn’t seem to add much, but they were nice to see (Cookie was funny as the norm). Again, the songs were also very good too. I love how Bill Sherman is using his music director duties and his Broadway experience to give the songs a very 42nd Street-sound to them. They’re really getting better and better each season.

INSERTS
We got the final new “Elmo the Musical” of the season - “Mountain Climber the Musical” - and it was very good. The songs were great as usual (I love the “You’re the Top” spoof that closes the segment) and it starts out with a typically terrible Muppet joke (Elmo tries imagining a mountain, and instead makes a molehill. Get it?). A recent CBS Morning Report feature showed they’re taping more segments for the next season (with Ryan Dillon as Elmo), so I’m looking forward to more great songs and segments.

The last two new “Cookie’s Crumby Pictures” segments of the season aired: “Lord of the Crumbs” and “Life of Whoopie Pie.” They were both very funny and I liked how Cookie was the “tiger” in the Life of Pi spoof, instead of the title character as I had assumed. There’s some more of these on the way for season 45 in the fall (as well as some much-needed new Super Grover 2.0 sketches), so there’s something else to look forward to. Among the new Word of the Day pieces, my favorite had to be the “unique” talk with Usher and Bert, who was hysterically dull as usual.

We got a decent number of cartoon/film segments, including a version of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” a catchy song about counting kangaroos, and (one I really enjoyed) a cute song about the importance of water.

There were also a few very classic-feeling sketches. One involving Cookie trying to play checkers with Abby, while avoiding eating the pieces, which was almost like a Cookie/Prairie Dawn sketch. Man, I miss her. Another one was a Grover bit about force. Not only was it clever, but it also had the return of Frazzle! And it was clear they intended to use him, as the other monsters in the segment were designed to resemble him as well. Finally, there was a bit about the letter H starring Cookie and Oscar. We’re seeing a lot of Cookie this season for sure, but it’s great they’re using Oscar in more sketches this season. Hopefully, that trend continues with others like Big Bird or Ernie and Bert, who’ve been pretty MIA for most of this season (except for a storyline they’ll star in later in February).

So, that was that chunk. Catch you later this month when we’ll be going over the next ones, which will include some more sport-themed episodes thanks to the Olymipics. See you next time on the street!

FEBRUARY 7, 2014

The Muppets (it's not confirmed which ones) will be appearing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon TONIGHT on NBC at 11:00 PM. This is very, very huge because tonight is the final episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Jimmy Fallon will be moving to The Tonight Show, so the Muppets appearing on the final show is a very big deal--and not to be missed! The Muppets are officially billed as the musical guests, so they will be performing as well. Very exciting!

Four new banners for Muppets Most Wanted have been released. Unsurprisingly, they use the same old poser stock images we've seen a million times before. The Kermit one is especially off-putting... but they're colorful and bold, so it's hard to complain too much. Here they are:

Our friends at ToughPigs.com were the first ones to find an odd little video featuring Kermit, Miss Piggy, and Constantine shilling for Love Movies, which is very much anti-movie pirating. In the video, Constantine and Kermit are used as a goofy metaphor for high quality movies you pay for, and low-quality, evil movies you obtain illegally. Anyway, it's a fun video. Watch it below:

My favorite thing that happened this week was this fantastic video from PBS featuring Murray Monster, Count von Count, and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock). The video is very, very funny and Murray steals the show. Also, how great is Matt Vogel's Count? Watch the video (which already has over three million views) below to find out!

An early screening of Muppets Most Wanted is taking place in New York City at The New York International Children's Film Festival on Saturday, March 15th. But this is no ordinary early screening, this one features a sing-along with songwriter Bret McKenzie! Tickets for this are sure to go extremely fast, so if you're interested ingoing, you should buy tickets ASAP!

Finally, our friend Sam O'Rama is hosting a special Muppet Monday! on March 17th in Chicago, Illinois at Club Foot. The event will feature Muppet trivia, Muppet themed drinks, Muppet music, videos, and much more. If you're in the Chicago area it sounds like it will be a rocking good time! For more info check out the official event page on Facebook.

The Muppets and Jimmy Fallon Sing Goodbye to "Late Night"

Jimmy Fallon has been one of the best friends to the Muppets and Sesame Street since Late Night with Jimmy Fallon began five years ago. The final episode of Late Night aired last night as Jimmy Fallon bid farewell to the late slot as he prepares to say hello to The Tonight Show. Jimmy decided to bring on the Muppets on final time to help him say goodbye, and it was pitch perfect and beautiful.

Check out the video from last night's show below, as Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, Bunsen and Beaker, Scooter, Walter, Pepe, Kermit, Miss Piggy, and a load of other Muppets perform "The Weight" from the film The Last Waltz. Like I said, it's simply perfect.

Thanks for everything, Jimmy. Congratulations on The Tonight Show!

And congratulations to the Muppets and the Muppet performers for an exceptional performance.
